Lightweight 3D formats expand Digital Prototyping

Lightweight 3D formats expand Digital Prototyping What to do for workgroups without full CAD access who participate in Digital Prototyping? XVL could be an answer. Digital Prototyping (DP) is a process that enables the development of new products through “creation, validation, optimization, management and manufacturing through virtual processes.” Major CAD vendors supporting DP are encouraging a new suite of applications to implement this ideal of a streamlined digital process. Its tools include 3D modeling software, simulation, FEA and other analyses, and direct-to-machining operations. More>>

Subractive vs. Additive Prototyping

Subractive vs. Additive Prototyping

Building a wall out of bricks and creating a plastic part out of plastic layers are both additive processes. As such, they share several advantages. Both are relatively simple, inexpensive, and repetitive—brick is piled on brick; plastic layer is laid upon plastic layer to form the finished product. But additive processes have limitations as well. One of the most significant is weakness at the joints.

NURBS Add a Curve to CAD Modeling

NURBS Add a Curve to CAD Modeling

NURBS have been used in high-end CAD systems for some years. For example, NURBS-based systems are behind the beautiful flowing curves in auto modeling. But now availability of low-cost NURBS-based systems is opening doors to use this modeling capability in a wide variety of new applications.

Selective Layer Sintering (SLS)

How the SLS process works SLS technology uses a CO2 laser to sinter (fuse) a variety of thermoplastic and metal powders to "grow" 3D objects layer-by-layer from 3D electronic data (STL files). Because this is an additive process, highly complex geometries can be built without issue; and, because th
